Karen is a writer, counsellor and trainer who specialises in working with the Gender, sexuality, and relationship diverse communities. A founder of Rural Rainbow they have been campaigning for many years for a better understanding of the particular issues faced by GRSD people outside of the conurbations of the UK. They have worked with a number of colleges locally to improve the training of counselling students in understanding gender diversity. As a former teacher they are very keen to improve this understanding at all levels of the education system. As a fully qualified counsellor they are currently in private practice, and will be combining this with with specialist post graduate training in working as a therapist with the GRSD community from July 2017. A graduate of the London School of Economics, their first degree was in philosophy.
They joined the Be board in December 2016. They are particularly excited by the mission to empower and upskill the community, providing a long lasting legacy. They also believe it is vital improve the outcomes for the community as a whole by engaging in training and development across all sectors and developing competencies and understanding.
They are a parent, and identify as queer and non binary. Born and brought up in Newcastle they now live in west Northumberland.
